Almyras is a non-governmental organization whose aim is to engage in cultural and environmental issues in the countryside of Cyprus, based in Ayia Varvara, Nicosia. Members of the organization are farmers, teachers, scientists, researchers, artists, writers, writers, students, households, skilled people who all share the same love for culture and the environment. The main objectives of Almyra are: – The promotion of the countryside through various activities and events. – Recovery, collection, processing, promotion and enhancement of folklore, historical and traditional elements of the countryside. – Organizing several events to inform its members, as well as the inhabitants of the wider region. – Set up a network of scientists, as well as writers and artists, to share their knowledge with rural residents and to promote creativity through different activities. – Development of research in the fields of science, technology and the environment. – A strong presence, with initiatives and participation in local, regional and international collaborations and programs related to the subject of the workshop activities. Almyras participates in various activities related to the environment and culture, including projects of local and international level. Some examples include: • Within the framework of the actions of DG DevCo program “Rural Dear Agenda-EYD 2015” funded by the European Commission, Almyras organized the “Environmental Education Program in schools in the wider area of the Municipality of Idalion”. The project aimed at promoting environmental awareness in the wider area of the Municipality of Idalion using non-formal learning and based on the curriculum of the Ministry of Education of Cyprus. • The EVS (European Voluntary Service) program from Erasmus plus, which took place from 15 February to 15 June. The project hosted 4 volunteers from Italy and Greece. The aim of the project was to raise environmental awareness of children in the wider area of southern Nicosia using non-formal education and outdoor activities. • A series of hand-made workshops with reusable materials, where children from nearby villages had the opportunity to participate. The aim of the workshops was to raise the awareness of the local community about the environment. The workshops focused mainly on attracting children who have limited access to such workshops because of their place of residence. • Music Festival Papoulos. A festival where a large number of people participated in the creation and design of the festival. Several artists participated during the festival, while a film about the festival was created by Christopher Papachristoforou, which was screened on our website. • Exhibition of an old photograph: The purpose of the exhibition was to show the way of life in the countryside earlier. • Laboratories for the construction of traditional kites with recyclable materials. The aim of the workshops was to revive the traditional way of building kites with recyclable materials and other natural materials. • Workshop for the construction of nests for small birds and insects in collaboration with the BirdLife Cyprus NGO.
